Farsley Celtic 0-2 York City

By James Grayson

Celtic crashed out of the FA Trophy after a disappointing 2-0 against a very strong York team.

John Deacey recalled Leeds loanee Scott Gardner back into the side. He replaced Lee Tuck. Deacey made two other changes, Curtis Aspden replaced Tom Morgan and Stephen Downes came back into the side to take Tristan Whitman's place.

Facing their old clubs were Anthony Lloyd and Stephen Downes. Lloyd left Celtic in September and Downes played for the Ministermen during their last season in the football league under Chris Brass.

For entertainment at Throstle Nest, there was little with both sides failing to live up to expectation. Both halves were similar with the second being different in only goals.

The first opening of the game arrived on 16 minutes when Richard Brodie was able to fashion his way through towards the goal. Luckily for Celtic Amjad Iqbal and Aspden were able to avert any attempted shot at goal. A minute later Simeon Bambrook’s long range free kick was easily caught by Tom Evans in the York goal. Bambrook’s effort was the only shot on target in the first half.

On 41 minutes Lloyd set-up danger man Martyn Woolford who then fired well wide. A minute later Craig Bentham shot well wide for Celtic.

HT 0-0

Despite neither side dominating and creating any chances, York managed to snatch the lead four minutes after the interval. Bentham conceded a needless free kick 25 yards away from his own goal and it was Woolford who decided to take it. WOOLFORD stepped up and managed to curl the ball around the wall and into the back of the net – 1-0.

Celtic made changes and Whitman was brought on along with Roy Stamer and their introductions brought Celtic back to life. On 72 minutes, Celtic nearly had an equaliser but they were denied by the bar and the assistant referee’s flag. Damian Reeves managed to fashion a clear opening but his thunderous effort cannoned back off the crossbar for York to clear. However if the ball had gone in it would have been ruled out for offside.

Reeves’ chance kick-started a good period of pressure for Celtic and two minutes later from a corner the ball went all the way towards the back post. It then fell kindly for Whitman five yards but his goal-bound effort hit a York defender and was cleared away.

Whitman’s chance wasn’t Celtic’s best – that came soon after Whitman’s. Another Stamer corner came into the box and this time Iqbal headed downwards and seemingly into the back of the net. However fortune held for York and their man on the back post cleared the ball away from danger.

But it wasn’t Celtic’s day and York got their second goal on the 89 th minute in calamitous fashion. Bentham who had moved into defence went for the same ball as his team-mate Mark Jackson did and ended up smashing the ball into him and gifting Craig FARRELL the opportunity to make it two and he sure did.
