David McNiven: “I’m looking forward to playing and scoring goals!”

By James Grayson

New loan signing, striker David McNiven has spoke for the first time since his move from Stafford Rangers. David is vowing to score the goals to keep Celtic in the Blue Square Premier.

David is the twin brother of Celtic defender Scott and the striker has a vast amount of experience. He started off at Oldham before moving onto York, Northwich, Leigh RMI, Queen of the South, Scarborough before Morecambe in 2006 who he departed for Stafford last summer.

David’s brother Scott was the prime reason for why he has swapped the Midlands for Yorkshire, he said: “My brother persuaded me as I had been telling about my situation at Stafford. John Deacey was interested so it’s nice to move here.

David believes Celtic’s chances of avoiding relegation are very high, he commented: “I wouldn’t have come otherwise; we’ve got a great chance. Altrincham and other teams could struggle before at the end of the season and with the way we played against Woking, it shows we have great chance to survive.”

David will assess his options at the end of the season as he still has a year to run on his contract at Stafford, David said: “Hopefully I could stay here, but we will see how things are then. At the moment my task is to try and shift Steve Torpey and Damian Reeves. Hopefully if I get my chance here I will take it. But I’m just looking forward to playing and scoring goals here.”

David is full of praise of John Deacey who he thinks has put together a good squad and singled out Georges Santos out for praise, he said: “It’s a good strong squad; looking at the Woking game they played some good entertaining football. I have played against Georges (Santos) a few times, he’s a steady player and one you would want in the back four.

David played at the Wembley last year after coming on as a substitute in Morecambe’s play-off final, David is delighted to have played in the game, he said: “Wembley was amazing; last year was a great year for everyone involved at Morecambe. It was just a pleasure to be involved in it.”

David is on loan until the end of the season.
